The Temperamentals

Arouet presents the Seattle Premiere of the Award Winning play,
The Temperamentals
A play by Jon Marans
Directed by Roy Arauz
May 10-25, 2013

The Temperamentals by Jon Marans (poster)The Temperamentals chronicles the founding of the Mattachine Society, the first sustained gay rights organization in the United States in the pre-Stonewall, McCarthy era. It is also the love story of two of its founding members, communist Harry Hay and Viennese fashion designer Rudi Gernreich. “Temperamental” comes from early 20th century as a slang for homosexual, and was used as a necessary code in the early 1950s as homosexuality was thoroughly prosecuted.

The New York Times called The Temperamentals an eminently likable docudrama about gay identity in the age of Eisenhower.” Backstage said “The Temperamentals is an exceedingly fine play – smart, passionate, focused, and satisfying.”

Jon Marans received the John Gassner Award for the The Temperamentals.

The Temperamentals” is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, New York, NY.

*The Thursday, May 10th performance will be interpreted for the hearing impaired

The House of Bernarda Alba

The House of Bernarda Alba posterThe House of Bernarda Alba
(La Casa de Bernarda Alba)
by Federico García Lorca
adapted in English by Emily Mann
May 4-19, 2012

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Federico Garcia Lorca finished what would be his final masterpiece, The House of Bernarda Alba. Two months later he was killed for his leftist politics.

After the death of her second husband, Bernarda Alba decrees a traditional eight-year mourning period. Tyranically ruling over her five daughters, she will do anything to safeguard her family’s place in the community and daughter’s futures. Jealousy and suppressed sexuality quickly rise to the surface, leading to rebellion and a tragically inevitable ending. Expressing the costs of repressing the freedom of others, 75 years later The House of Bernarda Alba is still a timeless work, particularly in today’s political climate.

“If we’re lucky, the people we loved – parents, friends, lovers, whatever – stick around until we’re ready for them to leave. If we’re lucky, they leave before things become impossible. But the trick is to recognize that precise moment of change, to be able to gracefully let go of a past that may never have been the way you want to remember it, and to embrace a present that is just dying for change.”

Philip and Barbara have been friends since they were 5 years old. Now nearing 50, the only thing keeping their friendship alive may just be its longevity, as they come to realize that each is not the person they believe and/or want the other one to be during one intense Sunday afternoon barbeque.

La Segua

La SeguaLa Segua
by Alberto Cañas
translated by Roy Arauz
dramaturgy by Charles Waxberg

Encarnación Sancho is the most beautiful woman in town. Convinced that she is a mythical segua who drove her first suitor mad, Encarnación becomes obsessed with the segua myth and realizes that all women are seguas in as much as physical beauty turns into or leads to ugliness and death.

Alberto Cañas is one of the preeminent Costa Rican cultural figures of the latter part of the 20th Century. In La Segua, he combines the traditional mesoamerican legend with actual events that occurred in the city of Cartago in the 1800s to compose a study of the relationship of one woman with her physical beauty.

Look for La Segua in the Spring of 2012.

Meet the Grays—an average family. Mira cooks, cleans, wears dresses, is sexually frustrated and her spouse is a workaholic veterinarian. Their son, almost 18, has a new girlfriend that he wants to lose his virginity with, is always hungry, and is constantly pulling on his penis. The only way in which this family is not conventional is that the parents are both women. What happens when their son wants to know who his dad is? The Gene Pool explores the family’s relationships and how they are dealing with their mid-life crises, their son’s resolution to lose his virginity, and… oh yeah, his question, “Moms, who is my Dad?”
